Charleston girls will look to compete for its 10th straight Regional Championship during today’s IHSA tournament in Effingham.
The regional consists of Altamont, Auburn, Casey-Westfield, Charleston, Effingham, Effingham St. Anthony, Marshall, Mattoon, Pana, Shelbyville, Taylorville, Teutopolis, Virden, Waverly, and Windsor.
Charleston is coming off an Apollo Conference championship where Stacey Zerbst was the league runner-up. Madeline Sanders also was all-conference as the Trojans look to make a push for a state berth.
Meanwhile, after years of competing in 2A, Mattoon made the cut to play in 1A and head coach Natalie Ambuehl hopes that the team can make a team appearance to the Sectional. Berit Haldorsen and Blaire Powers finished All-Apollo last week.
“I hope to advance as a team,” said Ambuehl. “We have got to start putting better, and leave bad holes behind us.”
