Megan Garrett eclipsed her own school record in the 800 meters in winning the sectional race at Mt. Zion on Thursday and advancing to the IHSA Class 2A girls state track and field meet next week.
Garrett broke her own mark by 1.18 seconds in beating runner-up Rachel Koon of Monticello by 7 seconds in 2:14.18.
A cramp caused the senior to step off from a 1,600-meter race in which she had entered with the fastest time – the 5:01.64 school record she had set earlier this season. Monticello’s Mabry Bruhn won the race in 5:13.39.
Mattoon’s Maya Cook relied on a heave of 35 feet, 3/4 inches to win the shot put by more than 9 inches.
Charleston’s Makenna McBride also advanced to the state track meet by clocking 13.18 seconds to take second in the 100 meters behind Mt. Zion’s Sara Addai, who ran 12.88. Addai also captured wins in the 200 (26.10) and 400 (57.57).
