Mattoon boys tennis coach Joey Boyer said that Tuesday’s sweep of Teutopolis was an important win for the team, heading into this weekend’s Apollo Conference tournament in Charleston.
Especially after a loss to Champaign Central the day before.
So Boyer played all eight varsity starters in a dual meet that was never close.
“The guys shook off a tough loss last night against Central and came out and played lights out against a traditionally good Teutopolis team,” Boyer said.
Ty Eastin and Jason Jiang stepped in to play at Nos. 5 and 6 singles while Nik James and Josiah Donaldson continued to play No. 3 doubles.
“I knew that this match was going to be a momentum swing for us, one direction or another,” Boyer said. “It was important that we get back to winning tennis. The players did that tonight by playing offensive tennis and supporting each other during critical points.”
Mattoon, now 6-2, plays St. Anthony on Thursday.
