Mahomet-Seymour set the tone early by taking the opening kickoff in for a touchdown and the defense shut down Charleston’s high scoring offense in a 35-3 win over the Trojans on Friday night.
On the opening kickoff, Cole Hubble ran from the left hash mark at the 10-yard line and cut up the middle. He saw the middle close and headed for the right sideline and ultimately took it 90 yards for the first score of the game to give the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead.
Charleston came back on its first play from scrimmage when Cory Spour ran for 62 yards to the Mahomet-Seymour 12. The Trojans were only able to gain 5 yards on the ensuing three plays and settled for a 24-yard field goal by Conor Woodley to make it 7-3.
After a three-and-out for Mahomet-Seymour, Charleston got the ball back and drove it to the Bulldogs’ 18-yard-line before a penalty and three incomplete passes gave Mahomet-Seymour the ball back on downs.
The Bulldogs took five plays to score. On the first play, Skyer Yancy scampered 40 yards. Three plays later, quarterback Braden Finch scored the first of his three touchdowns on a 29-yard run to make it 14-3.
Neither team was able to do much on their next two possessions. Charleston came up with a big break as the Bulldogs drove it down to the Trojans’ 13-yard-line before fumbling. Charleston gave it right back on the next play on a fumble with 1:13 left in the first half. Mahomet-Seymour took advantage of a short field and scored when Finch ran in from 6 yards out to make it 21-3 at the half.
The Bulldogs took control in the second half with a dominating ground game, picking up 161 yards rushing after the break. They also took advantage of time of possession, having the ball 16 minutes, 38 seconds of the 24 minutes in the second half. The Bulldogs added two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Mahomet-Seymour moves to 2-2 overall and 2-2 in Apollo Conference play. Charleston is also 2-2, 2-2.
Charleston will play at Taylorville on Saturday, April 17 at 5 p.m. The game day is a switch from the original schedule.
