The spring sports schedule continues as Mattoon boys soccer has a prime shot at three wins this week, while the Charleston volleyball team looks to keep pace towards the Apollo crown. Here is the week layout for this week’s sports.
Mattoon boys soccer
Mattoon looks to build from its 7-2-0 start to the season. Mattoon, 4-2 in the Apollo, remains in the hunt with Mahomet-Seymour (3-0-1), Mount Zion (3-0-1), and Lincoln (4-0-0). Mattoon plays on the road Tuesday at Teutopolis, which is 2-2-0 in the Apollo, and then last-place Taylorville (0-5) on Thursday. Friday features a non-conference match at home against Olney. All games start at 4:30 p.m.
Mattoon is 1-1 in the Apollo with a win over Lincoln and loss to Mount Zion last week. There are no games scheduled this week for COVID protocols as the team doesn’t return to action until next Monday.
Charleston boys soccer
Charleston is in danger of its first losing season since 1993 after an 0-4-1 start to the season. Their schedule does not get any easier. The Trojans must play at Mahomet-Seymour on Tuesday and at Lincoln on Thursday. On Saturday, Charleston returns home to play winless Taylorville.
After a non-conference match with Tri-County today, Charleston will get a chance to tie for the Apollo Conference lead with a match with undefeated Mahomet-Seymour. After that, the team will resume a week that features five games with a contest with Danville on Wednesday, Mattoon on Thursday, and Champaign Centennial on Saturday.
