Ty Graber ripped two home runs and drove in seven runs to help lead Lake Land to a doubleheader sweep of visiting Lincoln Land College in women’s softball.

The Lake Land softball team won its 11th and 12th straight games to improve to 16-4. 

In the first game, Lake Land scored five runs in the second inning and Rachel Kauffman allowed just one hit in the four and a half inning game. Kauffman had six strikeouts in the victory as Lake Land overcame four errors.

Graber hit a home run and a double to drive in four runs in the Lakers’ 8-0 victory and then fell a single short of the cycle in the team’s 8-1 victory, collecting a double, triple and another homer. Overall, Graber went 5-for-6 and scored five runs to increase her slugging percentage to .919 and her OBP to 1.419.

Carson Cole also had two hits and drove in a run.

It was the early innings that helped Lake Land take control in the second game as they scored four in the first innings. Graber again helped the Lakers with three hits and three runs batted in and Kauffman drove in two runs. Casey-Westfield grad Claire Maulding was the winning pitcher, throwing all seven innings and allowing five hits with one walk and nine strikeouts. 

Kaufman allowed only a first-inning double in one-hitting Lincoln Land in the opening game shutout. The right-hander struck out six batters and walked one.

Lake Land plays another doubleheader Wednesday, taking on Shawnee at 2 p.m.

Niebrugge, Risinger pace MHS volleyball

Faith Niebrugge and Tinley Risinger posted 11 digs apiece to lead Mattoon past Lincoln, 25-14, 25-20, in girls prep volleyball.

The Green Wave played without two starters – sidelined by an injury and by quarantine, respectively.

Mattoon’s JV lost 25-21, 25-20 and the freshmen squad fell in three sets, 22-20, 19-21, 5-15.

Green Wave soccer falls to Mt. Zion, 2-1

In a battle of two of the top boys soccer teams in the Apollo Conference, Mount Zion edged Mattoon, 2-1. Gavin Gonzalez drew a penalty kick and scored for Mattoon’s lone goal. The Green Wave (4-1) host defending conference champion Mahomet-Seymour at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Lake Land volleyball sweeps Wabash

MOUNT CARMEL – Lake Land won its third straight match and fifth out of the last six by sweeping Wabash Valley College in three sets. Lake Land is 10-10 overall and 7-4 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference, good for fourth place. 

Lake Land baseball postponed

Lake Land baseball’s game against St. Louis Community College was rained out, but the Lakers (7-7) will play host to Parkland at 2 p.m. at Laker Field on Wednesday.
