The Charleston High School boys golf team will play host to 11 teams in today’s CHS Invite at Charleston Country Club.
Besides CHS, Mattoon, Paris, St. Anthony, Champaign Central, Monticello, Sullivan, Olney, Lawrenceville, Effingham, and Mount Zion will compete. Tee time is 1 p.m.
Mattoon figures to be a contender for the title. The Green Wave are 8-1 in nine-hole matches and own three championship titles in 18-hole invitationals.
“I definitely feel that we have a good chance to win,” said MHS coach Bill Behrends. “We have beaten all the teams in the field at least once this season, so I feel good about our chances.”
Meade Johnson is coming off a 1-under-par 35 at Mattoon Country Club. Colton Romine is coming off a score of 39, while Behrends expects Stewart Druin to continue to improve.
“Meade has really stepped up lately, and I feel like his game is peaking at the right time,” said Behrends. “I’m looking for a good round from him tomorrow. I have a good feeling about Colton Romine and Meade tomorrow, and they can play with the best of them. Don’t count out Stewart Druin to compete for a top 10 spot as well.”
This meet serves as a tune-up for the Apollo Conference tournament set for next Tuesday.
“The number one players from Charleston, Lawrenceville, St. Anthony, Monticello, and Sullivan are all great players, so it will be interesting to see who comes out on top,” said Behrends.
