Mattoon American Legion Post 88 allowed two runs in the third and fifth innings and could not continue the potent hitting that had lifted the team to four straight wins in three days by a combined score of 32-2.
Instead, the team collected just five total hits Tuesday night, Trevor Smyser’s double the only one for extra bases.
“Had a couple opportunities to get some runs on the board, but just couldn’t get a hit when we needed it,” Post 88 coach Stacey Birdsong said. “I’m very proud of these kids and appreciative of the time our coaches have put in over the past month to get ready to play.”
Legacy scored one of its runs in the third after a fielding error and another run in the fifth on a wild pitch.
Meade Johnson singled in the fourth, advanced to third on Smyser’s double and scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Gunner Laughhunn.
These two teams face one another again Friday as part of another event through the Fourth of July weekend at Sunnyside Park’s Lou Renner Field.
“If we continue to pitch and play defense like we did this weekend,” Birdsong said, “we should be just fine and will have some fun through the month of July.”
