The Mattoon Pride 12u softball team captured first place over the weekend in the rain-shortened Terre Haute Border Wars tournament.
The squad didn’t allow a run in three games Sunday during bracket play after their pool play games had been rained out.
The Pride opened with an 8-0 win over the Mattoon Cobras in which Haley Helm pitched all four innings, allowing just one hit and striking out seven. Addison Leichty and Alaira Friese each had two hits while Ellie Wittenberg, Blair Powers, Kaitlyn Helm, Kameron Lathrop and Ellie Wittenberg each had a hit and an RBI.
In the semifinals, the 12u Pride squeaked out a 1-0 win over the Indiana Terror behind a four-hit, six-strikeout pitching performance by Leichty.
It was another strong pitching performance for the Pride in the championship as Amelia Collins allowed just one hit and struck out seven in a 5-0 shutout of the Midstate Blaze. Haley Helm and Lathrop each had a hit and an RBI to lead the offense, while Kaitlyn Helm and Powers each had a hit and scored a run.
The squad returns to action this weekend in Robinson.
