Lake Land men’s basketball (7-19, 2-13) came away with their second win in a row, beating Southeastern Illinois (5-20, 1-12) by the score 76-64. The win also ended the Lakers’ six game home losing streak.
Nick Cohorst scored and Clint Weber threw down a dunk to give Lake Land a quick 4-0 lead just under a minute into the game.
The teams mostly traded baskets for the first 10 minutes of the game. However, an 11-0 run for the Lakers, finished off by a Jason Larson layup, resulted in a 26-14 Lake Land lead with seven minutes to go in the first half.
The Lakers lead by 11 in the closing seconds of the first half before SIC’s Emmanuel Cross hit an off-balanced three at the buzzer to put the Lakers ahead, 39-31.
Lake Land came out slow in the second half. Justin Brown’s free throws trimmed Lake Land’s lead to 41-39 to close an 8-2 Falcon run that began the half.
The Lakers never gave up the lead. Over the next 10 minutes Lake Land outscored SIC 21-5 to build a commanding 62-44 lead.
Lake Land was led in scoring by Jevon Morris’ 17 points. Larson contributed 12 and Christian Kapongo had 10.
Brown led SIC with 21.
The Lakers’ defense held SIC to just 34% shooting on the night, while they converted on 46% of their attempts.
The Lakers return to action at home Wednesday night against Vincennes University at 6:00 p.m. for their final home game.
