Cade Landrus hit four 3-pointers and Sam Bickford made all eight free throws to score 16 points apiece and lead Charleston past host Newton 71-62 on Friday night in boys basketball action.
Two other Trojans scored in double-figures: Isaac Miller had 14 and Caleb Hurst added 11.
Charleston outscored Newton 26-6 in the third quarter, building its four-point halftime lead to 26 at one point behind a balanced offensive attack. Bickford and Landrus each scored six in the quarter – Bickford on four free throws and a field goal and Landrus on two 3s. Hurst contribute five points, Miller had four and Braun hit a 3-pointer to give the Trojans a 58-34 lead entering the final quarter.
“The kids played real well in third quarter,” CHS coach Brad Oakley said. “But we need to close better when we are playing with the lead.”
The Eagles held the Trojans to nine free throws and two field goals in the final quarter, scoring 28.
Charleston, which improves to 6-7, next plays at Lincoln on Tuesday night.
