Freshman Shania Schoonover scored a career-high 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds off the bench while freshman Kamaria Gant added 10 points, propelling the Lake Land College women’s basketball team to an 83-47 win over John Wood Community College on Saturday evening.

Lake Land shot 40 percent from the field, snagged a season-high 20 offensive rebounds, and forced 25 turnovers to 11 committed.

The Lakers, who improved to 13-1, play Kankakee College at 5 o’clock Sunday night. The Cavaliers come in 10-1 and receiving votes in the latest NJCAA Poll. 

Both teams got off to slow starts in the first half, combining to score eight points over the first five minutes of the first quarter. Together, they shot 4-for-16 during the first five minutes. Both teams would continue to struggle in the quarter with the Lakers showing a bit more offense, leading 12-6 after the first.

Freshman Abby Weis hit back-to-back 3-pointers to expand the lead to 18-6 with 8:28 to go in the half. John Wood and the Lakers went back and forth over the next five minutes with the lead staying between six and eight points. With the Lakers ahead 24-16 with 3:44 to go, Shania Schoonover made a field goal to start a 9-0 run that padded the Lakers lead to 17 with 1:50 to go in the half.

Lake Land led 39-20 at the half.

“I thought at 24-18, we came out and pushed the tempo and finally sat down and played better half court defense from the point on,” Lake Land coach Dave Johnson said. “I really thought this was the turning point.” 

Schoonover scored 16 points and had five rebounds off the bench in the first half while Weis had nine points, hitting three of five shots from 3-point range. 

Turnovers were key. John A Wood committed 10 in the first half, compared to four for Lake Land.

The Lakers came out of the half continuing their late first-half play by scoring the first six points of the third quarter, which pushed the lead to 51-26 with 5:42 to go in the quarter. The Trailblazers would not recover from the first four minutes, only managing to cut the lead to 21 with 4:26 to go in the quarter. The Lakers led 58-35 through three quarters. 

Lake Land would slowly build the lead in the fourth quarter, outscoring John Wood by a 14-7 clip the first 5:00 of the fourth quarter, to lead 70-40. They would keep pushing the lead up until the final 26-point tally.
