Kat Blase, Charleston’s imposing middle hitter, was named to the All-Apollo Conference volleyball team that was announced Tuesday.

CHS teammate Hannah Buescher was named to the second team as libero, as was Mattoon’s Grace Earp at outside hitter.

Blase posted 324 kills, blocked 57 shots (29 solo) and had a .406 hitting percentage for a Charleston (25-12) team that set a school record for wins and captured its first regional title in 22 years, its third overall.

“Kat leads by example both during practices and on game day,” said Trojans volleyball coach Steve Pamperin. “She is an incredible, talented offensive player that can put the ball away from the start of the match to the end. Kat brings stability to our offensive system and gives our team momentum throughout the match.”

Buescher recorded 292 digs this past season, had a 2.21 serve-receive average, and 44 assists. She also registered 34 aces.

“Hannah is a part of our team’s commitment to defense and ball control,” Pamperin said. “Hannah works hard every day in practice toward the team’s success.  Our team has put a premium on our ball control, and Hannah has embraced that challenge.”

The Trojans lost in the IHSA Class 3A sectional semifinal, 25-21, 25-23, to host Waterloo on Monday night. The second set was tied at 23-all before a side-out and a kill ended the match.

CHS had been delayed in getting to the match when its school bus broke down in Effingham. After a replacement bus was sent, the team reached Herrin about 15 minutes before the 6:30 p.m. match was set to begin.

“Losing is very hard, but we were competitive the whole match,” Pamperin said. “To be in a sectional semifinal and to know that we can hang with them is very cool. I told the kids afterward that losing is tough, but it’s nothing to hang your heads about.”
