Carter Gordon scored five minutes into the second half to enable Charleston to earn a 1-1 tie with Mattoon in an Apollo Conference match Thursday night.

The Green Wave scored with four minutes remaining in the first half on a goal by Quincy Hamilton that was assisted by Gavin Gonzalez.

Aly Abou-Zaid assisted on Gordon’s game-tying goal during a tight, defensive battle that had few shots taken on goal. CHS fired in only four on goal, one more than MHS. Ben Tresslar recorded two saves for the Trojans.

“We played well tonight,” CHS coach Josh Garrett said. “Both teams played very hard and it was a fun soccer game to watch.  We still have things to work on, but we are playing pretty good soccer right now.  We like the direction that we are headed.”

Charleston is now 6-5-1 overall, 3-2-1 in conference play. Mattoon is 8-2-2.
