Charleston went on the road for the fourth time this season and beat Lincoln, 24-21, in an Apollo Conference football matchup.

It was the first time since Oct. 14, 2016, that the Trojans claimed a league win.  Charleston beat Salem, 20-14, that year.

The game started off with the teams exchanging turnovers.  The Trojans had a drive where they reached the 10-yard-line before fumbling the ball away.  Three plays later, Charleston’s Sam Schuette  intercepted quarterback Dreyden Pozsgai at the 45-yard-line.

The Trojans took seven plays to find pay dirt for the first time.  Brayden Doyle scored on a 3-yard touchdown run to put Charleston ahead, 7-0.  The drive was highlighted by a 22-yard run by Cory Spour.

Charleston got on the scoreboard again in the second quarter on a 30-yard field goal by Connor Woodley to go ahead 10-0.

But Lincoln came right back on a 64-yard kickoff return by Brandon Sweitzer to give the Railsplitters their best field position of the game to that point.  On the ninth play of the drive, Payton Anderson scored on a 9-yard run to pull to within three.

After Charleston fumbled on the first play of its next possession, Lincoln took advantage to score again on a 6-yard run by Sweitzer to go ahead 14-10 at the half.

The two teams exchanged leads in the second half.

Charleston found the end zone in the third quarter on a 16-yard run by Doyle to go ahead 16-14.  The Trojans led until the 8:14 mark of the fourth quarter when the Railsplitters scored on 34-yard run by Sweitzer.  Lincoln led at that point, 21-16.

The Trojans struck right back on a 48-yard touchdown pass from Nick Cheney to Schuette to take a 24-21 lead after a two-point conversion.

Lincoln marched right down the field and got the ball to the Charleston 29-yard-line before being called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.  The Railsplitters were then forced to throw a pass into the end zone on fourth-and-26 that was broken up by Schuette to end the game.

Doyle led the Trojans with 86 yards rushing.  Cheney threw for 230 yards with nine passes caught by Spour.

Charleston will host its home opener next Friday when they face the Effingham Flaming Hearts.
