Homann paces Trojans in 15-team Charleston Invite

Blake Homann posted the best local finish in Saturday’s Charleston Cross Country Invitational held at EIU’s Panther Trail.

The CHS junior ran the three-mile course in 16 minutes, 49.3 seconds for 18th overall. Teammates Gunnar Barr, a freshman, finished 20 spots back in 18:09.48, followed by freshman Hunter Grabiec in 45th at 18:26.56 to help the Trojans finish tied for sixth out of 15 boys teams at the meet.

Tuscola won the boys team title, compiling 45 points among its top five runners who took seventh through 11th places. Mt. Zion finished runner-up with 72 points, followed by Mahomet (80), Champaign Central (112) and Cerro Gorda (196). Urbana and Charleston each scored 210 points.

Beau Farris posted the Greenwave’s best boys time, clocking 20 minutes, 22.13 seconds for 94th. MHS finished 15th.

Girls

Mattoon finished 11th and Charleston 12th out of 15 teams.

Mattoon Senior Oaklie Layton led the Green Wave by finishing 55th in 22:57.89 while Charleston sophomore Samantha Fehrenbacher led the Trojans, taking 72nd with a time of 23:53.65.

“Around half of our team is new this year,” said CHS girls coach Chris Hawk. “So we are still figuring things out, but we ran well today with three new PRs.”

Fehrenbacher was the Trojans’ third lead runner in three races this season. Grace Edwards finished first for Charleston in the first meet at Paris last Saturday and Amber Weiss was first for CHS at Altamont on Thursday.

“Amber, Grace, and Samantha have been 1, 2 and 3 for us in each of our first meets,” Hawk said. “Junior Hadley Webb and freshmen Chloe Cartright and Mya Madlem have been running well for us so far in spots 4-6.”

Mt. Zion scored 63 points to win the girls team title by 40 over runner-up Mahomet. Effingham finished another two points back for third, followed by Centennial at 107.
