Charleston goalkeeper Drew Dow initially made the stop in a shootout Saturday during the Red and Gold soccer tournament at Sister City.
The Trojans had tied Effingham, 3-3, during regulation of their second game.
Charleston and Effingham had then tied, 4-4, in their shootout, each team missing a shot to force another OT where additional shots are played until one team scores and the other does not.
CHS missed its sixth shot, setting up the decisive PK goal by Effingham. On the shot, Dow initially made the save, but the ball bounced off the post and rebounded off the junior into the net.
As a result, CHS finished 1-1 in its four-team-round robin bracket, an adjustment made after the 12-team weeklong tournament had been reduced to a day after weather temperatures hovered near 100 degrees most of the week. The tourney featured three separate brackets.
“With the shootout, we feel good about how our guys did,” CHS assistant boys soccer coach Ben Tresslar said. “We haven’t spent much time working on penalties this year, but we were impressed with how our guys stepped up under pressure. We caught a few bad breaks with the post, but it was a well-deserved win for Effingham.”
Grant Kattenbraker and Russell Applegate scored twice apiece to lead CHS to a 5-0 win over Robinson in its earlier game. Kattenbraker also posted an assist. Applegate, meanwhile, added both a goal and an assist in the second game against Effingham.
“We had a lot of positives coming out of the tournament,” Tresslar said. “We possessed the ball well in the first game and our attack looked solid. We have a lot of newcomers this year so it was great to get them some experience before we start the regular season. There’s definitely some things that we need to build on before our next game but we’re optimistic about how the team looks.”
