
Mattoon relied on 3-point shooting to upend Charleston in the IEMA Class 8-4A regional basketball championship Thursday night.
Ella Conyers made four 3-pointers and Emily Maple sank two in Mattoon’s 27-22 victory in the eighth-grade tournament.
Mattoon only made one two-point field goal, scoring the rest of the points on seven free throws.
Conyers finished with 17 points and Maple scored the other 10.
Mattoon advances to play in next Wednesday’s Section 6 game at Mahomet-Seymour Junior High. Tip off is set for 6:30 p.m. Mattoon will face the winner of Friday night’s game between Champaign Jefferson and Urbana Middle.
Mattoon had defeated Effingham Junior High, 19-16, to reach the title game while Charleston had previously defeated Mt Zion, 26-18.
Mattoon (15-3), which took a two-point lead through the first quarter, slowly padded its lead to 22-13 entering the final quarter and then held off a late charge by Charleston.
